47-G, Ferreira House
Khotachiwadi, Mumbai, MH
As part of KRVIA’s 2024 Monsoon Elective, this collaborative project focused on documenting the urban heritage of Mumbai through the precinct of Khotachiwadi, with particular attention to the nearly 200-year-old Ferreira House. Conducted with a team of 12 students and 2 elective mentors, the initiative set out to capture the spirit of this historic neighbourhood using contemporary digital tools.

Combining photogrammetric scanning with oral history, the project created a detailed record of the structure and its artefacts. Digital twins were developed at multiple scales, from the neighbourhood and house to interior spaces and individual objects, ensuring accurate preservation of both architectural and cultural details. Parallel research into oral narratives, including conversations with fashion designer James Ferreira, added layers of personal and social history, linking tangible artefacts to the broader story of a changing Mumbai.

The process merged the precision of digital technology with the warmth of storytelling, resulting in an interactive online platform that allows users to explore Ferreira House virtually. This initiative not only preserves a vital piece of Mumbai’s built heritage but also invites new forms of engagement with the city’s living history.
